Persistence & Adaptability

A new spin on Ralph Waldo Emerson's wise old words about stick-to-itiveness as the path to design excellence.

A Compounding Effect

For years, I've shared a particular quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson with designers I admire. It's become something of a touchstone for me, encapsulating what I've observed in the most successful product designers:

The power of a man increases steadily by continuance in one direction.

He becomes acquainted with the resistance, and with his own tools;

Increases his skill and strength and learns the favorable moments and favorable accidents.

He is his own apprentice, and more time gives a great addition of power,

Just as a falling body acquires momentum with every foot of the fall.

While Emerson wasn't addressing product design in the age of AI, his words capture something crucial about how designers grow, improve, and remain relevant. They speak to the interplay of persistence and adaptability that defines success in our rapidly evolving field.

Persistence in design means maintaining focus on your craft, relentlessly pursuing excellence even as the landscape shifts beneath your feet. It's about showing up day after day, honing your skills, and pushing through challenges. But in a world of constant technological change, persistence alone isn't enough. That's where adaptability comes in.

Adaptability is the willingness to pivot, to embrace new tools and technologies, to see disruption as an opportunity rather than a threat. It's what allows designers to stay relevant as AI and automation reshape our industry. Together, persistence and adaptability create a powerful synergy. They allow you to maintain your course while constantly adjusting your sails.

As you persist and adapt, you develop a deep familiarity with both traditional design tools and emerging AI technologies. You learn to recognize patterns and solve problems almost instinctively. This human intuition, combined with AI capabilities, creates something that pure automation can't match.

Your skills compound over time, building upon each other in ways that aren't always immediately apparent. Each project you complete, each new technology you master, adds to your repertoire. As you continue to learn and grow, you develop a unique blend of experience and innovation that becomes increasingly valuable.

Time becomes your ally in this journey. The longer you persist and adapt, the more powerful your skills become. Experienced designers who embrace new technologies often solve complex problems more quickly and effectively than both novices and those resistant to change.

Inspired by Emerson's words, we might reframe this for today's product designers:

Confidence increases as curiosity fuels creativity.

Applying self-awareness, I test what I'm made of.

Humble and resilient, I evolve with each insight,

Turning odds in my favor with wisdom I acquire.

Like water falls to gravity's pull, I rise to design.

This captures the essence of what I've observed in successful product designers navigating the AI revolution. They're endlessly curious, always looking for new ways to solve problems and create value. They understand their strengths and weaknesses, focusing their efforts where they'll have the most impact. They remain humble and resilient, open to learning and unafraid of failure. Over time, they develop a knack for turning challenges into opportunities, using AI as a powerful ally rather than seeing it as a threat.

Becoming a great product designer in the age of AI requires consistent, focused effort combined with a willingness to adapt and leverage new technologies. It's a journey of continuous learning and improvement, of pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities.
